June 4th - Protest at Tweed

Report on the City wide June 4th, School Budget Cuts Protest in front of the York City Department of Education's Tweed building.

June 4th - PS 24K

PS 24 had an amazing turnout for our June 4th protest. Over 125 participants total, with about 50 parents participating. We got 350 signatures on our petitions to the mayor to restore all funding to schools. We are on a main car, truck and pedestrian route in Brooklyn and the support from drivers and passersby was incredible. The students were right there with us, behind the gate cheering and chanting. We are all feeling very inspired!

All were organized by parents and school workers at each school after a call went out from GEM and NYCORE. We ended the day with a rally at the Department of Education. It was covered on the TV news. See the link below and check out the GEM website for more info and pictures from the schools. Gloria

June 4th: IS 218K

Around 40 IS 218 teachers, paras, counselors and secretaries (most of the staff) participated in a very lively protest outside our school between 7:45 and 8:30 this morning. A lot of passing cars and trucks honked their support. We distributed a leaflet we produced (entitled "Defend Public Education: Stop the Cuts") to students and parents and which we intend to get out more widely. We were also joined by a few teachers from K 683, the high school opened this year in the 4th floor of our building where almost all the teachers would have been laid off if Klein had sent out the pink slips.
We are considering holding protests every Friday until the end of the year.
It is also worth noting that the New York Teacher sent a photographer who took quite a few pictures and said the protest would be covered.

All the best,
Tom Crean, chapter leader IS 218
